If you own your own business, it is important that you are prepared for whatever might come your way—and not just in regard to market fluctuations. 

Emergencies and disasters are extremely common and often happen with little notice, which means that it is important to have a plan in place to take care of yourself and your staff just in case. One of the ways you can do this is by stocking an office emergency kit with necessary supplies for all of your staff in case you must seek shelter at work while there is danger present. 

Why Stock an Office Emergency Kit? Stocking an office emergency kit is one of the best things you can do to keep yourself and your staff safe in case of an emergency. 

While some emergency scenarios will require you to evacuate (and you should plan accordingly, just in case), scenarios such as severe weather might mean you need to stay put where you are until the threat has passed and/or help can arrive. 

By having an emergency kit stocked and ready, you can be certain that you and your staff have enough food and water to survive, as well as necessary medical equipment in case of an injury or other issue while you await assistance. 

Must-Have Supplies in Your Office Emergency Kit Having the right supplies in your kit will not only provide you with peace of mind, but you will also be prepared for any scenario that may arise while you and your employees are in the workplace. 

As you plan, it might be helpful to make an emergency kit checklist to be sure you do not miss anything. Some of the supplies you should absolutely include are: 

• A first aid kit, complete with all basic medical supplies such as bandages, painkillers, etc. 
• Non-perishable foods such as canned goods and protein bars 
• Enough water to last each person at least three days (one gallon, per person, per day is recommended) 
• Flashlights and extra batteries 
• An emergency weather radio that is manually or battery-operated 
• Toilet paper, paper towels and hand sanitizer
